Historical Days is this Saturday, July 2nd, on the Village Green by the Pioneer Museum. This is the 65th year that the Orcas Island Historical Society has sponsored this summer celebration of the island’s history. It will be a fun- packed day with something for everyone!
The day’s festivities will kick off at 10:00 with the much loved pie booth. Our friendly volunteers will be at our booth close to the Pioneer Museum serving slices of home-baked fruit pies – raspberry, blueberry, cherry, rhubarb, apple, and strawberry. Pie a la mode is available as an option thanks to the generous contribution of Island Market. The pie booth will close when the pies run out, so plan on getting yours early so you don’t miss out!
The Historical Society will also have a beer garden next to the Museum, with beer generously supplied by Island Hoppin brewery. And you need something to eat to go with your beer, so there will be a hot dog stand, with delicious hot dogs prepared to order by our Board members and staff. The beer garden and hot dog stand are set up with equipment supplied by the Orcas Island Kiwanis Club and the Orcas Island Lions Club and will be open from 10 to 4. See you there!
The Pioneer Museum will be open from 11 to 4 and admission is FREE for everyone on Historical Days. Come and see how early settlers lived on Orcas, learn about the bison that roamed the island 14,000 years ago and the Indians who made Orcas their summer home before European settlers arrived. If you haven’t visited our “Wings Over Orcas Island – An Aviation History” yet, this is your chance.
Crow Valley School Museum on Crow Valley Road will also have FREE admission for Historical Days. They are open from noon to 4; come and see what school was like 125 years ago!
At noon, the Historical Society will once again have a float and marchers participating in the Chamber of Commerce’s annual 4th of July parade. Look for us there!
At 1:00 Bogdan Kulminski will kick off the children’s games behind the Pioneer Museum. Bring your family and let the kids join in for lively games of tug-of war, laughter filled burlap sack races and other fun filled events. This is a great way for them to work off that pie and ice cream!
At 1:30 the Harvey Family will open up their logging show, demonstrating the skills used to fell and dress timber on the islands. This is always a popular part of the Historical Days celebration. The logging show will run until 3:30.
