DanaLouis_working at SJIMAThe San Juan Islands Museum of Art is announcing the return of Dana Lynn Louis to the island to present DRAWING PRAYERS on April 1 at 7:30 pm at the San Juan Community Theatre.

The public and art community are invited to enjoy the talk and slide presentation, one of SJIMA’s Art As A Voice series, where Louis will provide a fascinating glimpse into her artistic vision. She will describe her experiences, process, inspiration and the impact of social and political concerns on her art.

For over a decade, Louis worked in West Africa helping to create the Ko-falen Cultural Center in Bamako, Mali. That work had to end in 2012 due to the Mali Civil War. Since then, her work, including her current installation, has been deeply informed by the loss of place.

Louis’ work is internationally exhibited and collected. Articles about her work have appeared in Sculpture Magazine, Artweek and the German periodical Glashaus, among other periodicals. In addition to awards from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, The Ford Family Foundation, and The Oregon Arts Commission, Louis is a recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation grant.

Tickets are $16, SJIMA members pay $13, and student tickets are $8. Tickets are available at SJIMA (360-370-5050) and the San Juan Community Theatre at 100 Second Street in Friday Harbor (360-378-3210).

Louis’ exhibition As Above, So Below is open until April 4. The other two exhibitions, Ai Weiwei: Fault Line and Sleep of Reason: Selected Prints by Francisco Goya are open until April 11.

Upcoming is FRAGILE WATERS: Ansel Adams, Ernest H. Brooks II & Dorothy Kerper Monnelly, opening Saturday, April 23, 2016.
