I was certain it would be reported as “an elderly woman”, which I am, but at least not as calling “in a panic”, which wouldn’t have surprised me. I come from dairy farm country, cows loose are nothing new to me, and are generally amenable to being pastured again, if one is calm about it. They got out across the lane from me, and I’m sure also broke through a temporary fence at the back of my lot, to a large field and pond.
I called 911, explained the problem, got dressed and started to herd them back to the field gate; some actually going back the way they came, up the bank and through the very old fence.
Trying to get them back in the gate without help wasn’t going to make it; the cattle still in the field wanted to get out and join the fun, so I had to secure the gate again, wondering why no neighbors heard or noticed. Ginger Moore stopped on her way to work, but had to go around, to keep them from heading to the main road. She took a picture, with a few of the cows/calves heading east. Bert, from Deer Harbor Charters, stopped and suggested calling Nigrettos, as I had no idea who they belonged to, having just recently released to this property. I called, and she kindly said she’d call the owner, and I went back to my herding efforts. Bert also had to go around the block to keep them from scattering. Suddenly an even larger herd came running down my driveway to the lane, about the time the deputy arrived, apparently shaven, breakfasted and fully uniformed, informing me there was only one deputy on call for the weekend.
The critters, following the leader, moved on to the east, and I was glad to see they had turned into the Johnson yard, where “a long black line” was noted by Angie looking out her window. She and Jeff walked the critters out of their yard and back to where I was, along with the deputy and his van, keeping them from heading west. I have a picture of the deputy, standing by his van, pointing towards the field – I presume so the cows would know where to go? I opened the gate, they all peacefully entered (the non-escapees apparently having lost hope and gone), and Jeff closed the gate for me. I noted two more laggards coming down my driveway, but they remembered how they’d gotten out, climbed the bank and got themselves in.
The owner did not show up until this was all over, at which time I guess the deputy told him to fix the fence, which he started work on that day.
Anyway, that’s how yours truly recalls it; I was in my PJ’s, had to return to the house to change and get my camera; 911 called back for some reason I couldn’t make out before the deputy got there; I tracked some very slurpy cow poo from front to back door, and next day another calf got out the same hole. A nice lady & daughter passing by alerted me to it, and together we got the critter back through the gate, and it took both of us to reposition it. I’m getting weak in my elderly condition, sad to say….
Best Wishes ! Katie Jensen 437 Nordstrom Lane
In all fairness I should have mentioned that Ginger was on her way to work, and Bert to catch a ferry. I know they’d have helped otherwise, but apparently could see there was no particular problem at the time, except needing another cow chouser….
You go girl, Katie!
Katie, to me “elderly” is a state of mind. I would certainly not refer to you as elderly. “Older”, which seems to connotate years, yes, but never elderly.
Have you thought of offering a cow wrangling course for the deputies?
Katie, great story. You should be a writer!
