Friday, September 7, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Orcas Center
— from Kathleen Youngren —
Sheila Gaquin will present a short program at the Opening Reception Friday, Sept 7, 5:30 to 7:00, Sheila’s talk and Q&A will be at 6:00. Don’t miss it.
In a conversation from her home on Orcas, Sheila shared, “I have always made art–pen and ink sketches, biological illustrations, watercolor paintings, cartoons and most consistently, travel sketchbooks. I‘ve also made quilts off and on since the 70s. It was only after I retired from teaching that I embraced fabric as my medium and began making art quilts. Most of my quilts are photo-realistic images of the people and places I love.
“Today the styles and themes of art quilts are as varied as the work produced by artists in any other medium. In addition art quilts often incorporate materials and techniques from other artistic traditions such as painting, photography, beading, embroidery and more, while still maintaining the recognizable elements of traditional quilts–fabric pieces, layers, and top stitching.”
Everyone is invited to the opening reception, Friday, September 7, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
