As islanders plan locally-inspired meals for the holidays, you might want to turn to the locally-inspired book, BOUNTY, a 124-page collection of photographs, profiles, and recipes for a behind-the-scenes look at Lopez Island farms and farmers. On Wednesday, November 15, at 6:00 PM, join us at Darvill’s Bookstore for a special Artsmith Salon Series event, when Sue Roundy, chef Kim Bast, and author Iris Graville will share stories, photographs, and nibbles from BOUNTY.
Sue Roundy conceived of the BOUNTY project to celebrate those who provide much of our food. Most food travels an estimated 1,500 miles, but as Henning Sehmsdorff of S&S Homestead Farm said, “Our dream is that the community will feed itself. The only question people will ask about their food is which of their neighbors’ farms it came from.”
The community-funded BOUNTY project involves two dozen Lopez Island farms and the support of the Lopez Community Land Trust and Lopez Locavores. This included an experiment asking individuals and families to commit to eating locally produced foods and sharing their experiences. Participants reported being “delighted with the quality and variety of foods available,” with “a heightened sense of taste and an underpinning of gratitude at every meal.”
Those interested in learning more about the BOUNTY project, including developing a resilient local food network and the marvelous foods available in the islands, are invited to attend the special Artsmith Salon Series event at Darvill’s, and to visit lopezbounty.org/about/.
