The September photo exhibit at the Orcas Center will be focused on the theme “abstract photography.” Entitled “The Abstract Eye,” the show will open Friday, September 4, with a reception for participating artists in the Madrona Room at 5:30 p.m.

Both the Center Lobby and the Madrona Room will be hung with prints, and a big show is expected, says organizer Dave Kosiur.

Exhibitor Joe Floren says, “‘Abstraction’ is a hard term to define; and abstract art, including photography, is sometimes a difficult concept for viewers to grasp.  But the show ought to be an interesting one.”

>Sponsored by Orcas Island Camera Club, but open to all Orcas photographers, the works in the exhibit build on several recent months of discussion at club meetings and related exploration within the abstract mode.  Results show that this approach allows a very wide range of subjects and techniques, as indicated in the accompanying photo.

Take-in will be on Wednesday, September 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the print hanging will start immediately after that. Those who are unable to bring their prints in during the take-in hours, are asked to arrange for someone to drop them off.

Some forms will need to be filled out for the Center at that time. Orcas Center policy is to ask for a selling price for each piece that’s hung, but you may indicate “NFS” (not for sale) when submitting a print. The committee reserves the right to decide which submissions fit the theme of the show.

Prints should be matted in a neutral (white preferred) mat and framed with a black frame, if at all possible. Prints should be ready to hang, including wire. No size limit will be imposed. Those who submit more than one print are asked to indicate their priorities for hanging. (If room is left after hanging all first-priority items, show organizers will then proceed to hang second-priority items, and so on until the space is filled.)

The reception for the exhibit is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 4th. Exhibitors will be asked to provide refreshment for the reception.
