The Orcas Island Library’s Art Show for the month of September features the work of Sally Walker and Ritambhara Tyson, two outstanding pet portraitists who use art to express their love of animals.

Sally gravitated toward zoology in college, immediately discovering that she was better at drawing animals than studying them. After careers as a scientific illustrator and in the fishing industry, she returned to her passion for creating art, adopting the computer as a new art medium.

Ritambhara has done art in various forms all her life. When her ‘heart dog’ Opal died after 16 years, her grief led her to creating portraits of friends’ departed  beloved pets as gifts to them. The practice has honed her watercolor skills and brought her joy in sharing in the joy she brought to people who loved their animals.
