oystersCelebrate the salty tastes and traditions of San Juan Island waters this fall. Savor engaging conversation, talks, tours and demonstrations as well as fresh oysters on-the-half-shell, and other sustainably harvested seafood, on October 15, 2016 at Rosario Resort, overlooking the waters of East Sound on Orcas Island.

The 1st Annual Salish Sea Festival will bring together seafood lovers with engaging speakers and panels on salmon conservation, tribal and local traditions, history and challenges of shellfish and seafood production in San Juan County. This is the first event of its kind in San Juan County, offering a full day of talks, workshops, tours about the history, issues, and opportunities related to seafood resources in the Salish Sea. Learn from local shellfish producers about what types of oysters, mussels and clams they grow, their unique tastes and the challenges of production. Hear from a long time local reef net fisherman and a Lummi tribal fisheries expert talk about salmon recovery and management, treaty rights and the challenges ahead. Savor fresh oysters on-the-half-shell, wild-caught local salmon and engaging conversation. Attendees can enjoy workshops on local seaweed identification and beneficial uses, a demonstration about making sushi from locally sourced materials, and may also choose to take a boat tour to a local shellfish farm and hatchery on Lopez Island or a van to tour a local king salmon hatchery.

At 5:30 pm, the Festival will host a Taste of the Salish Sea (open to everyone) featuring small tastes prepared by renowned chefs who highlight the unique flavors of our islands and the surrounding sea. Nationally acclaimed chefs from the Willows Inn on Lummi Island; Hogstone’s Wood Oven, Rosario Resort and the New Leaf Café on Orcas Island, will be among those preparing hyper-local bites.
