Glorious weather arrived just in time for the 2nd annual Orcas Island Bird Fest this past weekend. Many of the happenings were outdoors, and blue skies and warm temperatures provided the perfect backdrop for Saturday’s events.
A colorful display at the first Farmer’s Market of the year showcased imaginative entries into the No Rules! Birdhouse contest. Fun and merriment ensued as the Bird Costume Parade wound its way through Eastsound at noon, led by a giant penguin – none other than Orcas Chamber Director, Lance Evans. Children and the young-at-heart dressed as their favorite bird and inspired onlookers to take care of our avian friends.
Event registrants were treated to a Buck Park-area bird walk with Barbara Jensen of San Juan Audubon, or a nature hike through Turtleback Mountain Preserve with Dean Dougherty and Jerry Kasparek. Caroline Buchanan offered “Capturing the Essence of Birds with a Brush” for aspiring artists. Boat and kayak trips with area outfitters continued throughout the afternoon. Wolf Hollow Rehabilitation Center offered a challenging wildlife quiz and a visit with a Red-tailed Hawk. Lori Benjamin’s “If That Bird Could Talk” nature writing session rounded out the day’s workshop offerings.
Scientists shared their findings on various climate and environmental factors that are affecting regional bird and wildlife populations at two sessions on Saturday. Dr. Peter Hodum, Dr. Scott Pearson and Francis Wood discussed “Changing Landscapes and How It Affects Birds” at The Gallery. Keynote speaker Dr. John Marzluff joined Dr. Hodum and Dr. Pearson at Random Howse for “Changing Waters and How It Affects Birds” later in the day.
Kudos to event director, Kim Middleton, the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce, and all involved in bringing the 2nd annual Bird Fest to our community. It’s not too late to visit the art exhibit at The Orcas Island Historical Museum through May 15th.
