“Even just committing to one action helps,” urged Katie Johnson, Marine Project Coordinator for San Juan County. She’s referring to Plastic Free July, a challenge that encourages millions of people around the world to find ways to cut back on their plastic consumption throughout the month. “Whether it’s bringing your own bags, saying no to plastic utensils, or helping clean a beach, every action matters,” said Johnson.

San Juan County officially declared the month of July as Plastic Free in 2021 to address the growing issue of plastic pollution washing up along our island’s shorelines. These efforts are important for protecting marine ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Plastics in the ocean can break down into microplastics that enter the food web. Marine mammals are frequently becoming entangled in plastic, and many seabirds are found with stomachs full of plastic debris.

“When residents and visitors cut back on single-use plastics, or swap them for reusable alternatives, it helps keep plastic waste out of our local waters to begin with,” said Johnson. There are many simple ways to refuse, reduce and reuse plastics. Plastic Free Salish Sea, a local initiative supported by the Marine Resources Committee, San Juan County Solid Waste Program, and Friends of the San Juans, provides inspiration, ideas, and community events to help individuals reduce their plastic waste.
