— from Paul Freedman for Salmonberry School —

Salmonberry School is thrilled to announce the hiring of our new Kindergarten teacher, Paul Brahce. Brahce brings with him a tremendous background in early childhood and early grades education. He also has an impressive resume in school leadership in progressive and independent schools. He is an always affable, extremely knowledgeable and deeply dedicated educator who will undoubtedly be an asset to the entire Orcas Island educational community.

Specifically, Paul Brahce has completed graduate studies at the University of Washington, Antioch College, Earlham College and Seattle Pacific University. He has served as Head of School for the Little School in Bellevue, WA for thirteen years as well as Head of the Wingra School in Madison, WI for eight more years, and was Executive Director at the Preschool of the Arts also in Madison. Throughout his time in independent school leadership, Brahce has always sought out ways to stay active in teaching his favorite ages of childhood, 4-6 yr olds, where he now returns at Salmonberry School.

Paul Brahce believes strongly in learner-centered models of education he writes, “Schools don’t have to make children learn…In my experience, effective teaching involves knowing children well, nurturing their minds and spirits, and stretching them to explore new possibilities.”

Salmonberry School is delighted to extend an invitation to the entire Orcas Island community to come and welcome Paul Brahce to the island at our community potluck and sing along on Tuesday, June 5 at 5:00. Singer/songwriters Tom Rawson and Mandy Troxel will be on hand to share some songs with you all. Salmonberry’s classrooms will also be open to all visitors.
