In Eastsound today,  25 children age 6-11 from Salmonberry School participated in a walk-a-thon to raise money and awareness to contribute to an organization called Amman-Imman (Water is Life). The organization  project, “Wells of Love,” raises money to drill deep water wells in a destitute and drought stricken region of Niger, “The Azawak.”

The Salmonberry School walkers will add their collected donations to those of other kids from all over the world as part of a global youth effort to help this poorest region of the poorest country on Earth, school director Paul Freedman said.

The kids began at 12:30 p.m. from a spot on North Beach Road, north of Shinola and Homegrown Market.  Kids will walk half-mile loops through town, with each half-mile walked earning a few pennies from our many pledged supporters.
