Grab a flag and know when to use it

Boating can be challenging for new boaters and old. Recreational boaters as well as commercial operators need to know about local whale regulations and what to look for.

We at Deer Harbor Charters want to remind boaters to grab a Whale Flag from the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee (SJC MRC) before boating this season. The SJI MRC adopted an easy flag to help signal boaters when whales are present in the US & Canada.

Just like a diver down flag, you simply fly the whale flag when whales are present. The flag signals other boaters that whales are in your vicinity and vessels should slow down (7 knots or less) and maneuver appropriately. Effectively slowing vessels and lessening the chances of a vessel strike or disturbance.

While a permanently mounted flag may look cool it defeats the message and the work people have put into keeping wildlife safe.

Join Deer Harbor Charters on Orcas Island for a whale & wildlife tour from the Deer Harbor Marina or Rosario Resort next time! Reserve your space online at deerharborcharters.com.
