One day with more than a dozen Speakers, musical performances, and more, presenters from Orcas Island and across the United States. Talks are limited to 18 minutes or less.
Lunch will be offered as an add on and will be hosted by the New Leaf Cafe.
“This IS America” : Exploring the relationship between our Island individualism and our place within the larger collective American experiment. Presentation topics will range from psychology and medicine, law enforcement, media reporting, oceanic ecosystems, national policy, food, and more. On this day we turn the lens around and examine our place and contribution to our collective national identity.

TJ MARTIN:
TJ Martin is the co-director and academy award winner of the 2012 Best Feature Documentary film UNDEFEATED. Martin’s Oscar win made him the first director of African American descent to receive an Academy Award for a feature length film.
Following this achievement, Martin was listed on Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 list alongside prominent African American figures such as President Barack Obama, Professor Cornell West and Lebron James. That same year, Martin also received the award for “Outstanding Achievement in Directing” from the Seattle International Film Festival.
RHEA MILLER:
Rhea is a social artist and the Assistant Director of Lopez Community Land Trust. She served over 10 years as County Commissioner of San Juan County, WA, with an emphasis on environmental protection and sustainability in housing, agriculture, and people.
She has been interviewed on “Good Morning America Sunday” and “CBS Sunday Morning,” and has a long history as a community organizer with international experience. She completed a Masters of Divinity in Feminist Liberation Theology from the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, MA, and authored the book Cloudhand, Clenched Fist: Chaos, Crisis, and the Emergence of Community.
Rhea lives on Lopez Island, WA, in a straw bale home with a wastewater garden, rainwater catchment,composting toilet, and peace gardens full of vegetables and flowers.
PAUL FREEDMAN:
Paul Freedman is the father of two amazing teenage children. He has been an elementary school teacher for 22 years in both public and independent schools. He and his family moved to Orcas Island in 2000. In 2001 he became the founding Head of Salmonberry School and Learning where he continues to work. Paul holds an MA in Education from Goddard College. He served for four years as a Contributing Editor for the education journal, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice. He also currently serves as a faculty member of the Self-Design Graduate Institute in Bellingham, WA. He is a widely published writer, educator, activist and speaker.
JEREMIAH “JAY” JULIUS (Sle-lh’x elten) of the Lummi Nation:
“Jay” is an Officer (Secretary) of the governing body of the Lummi Nation (Lummi Indian Business Council), and is the son of Doreen Lane (mother)and Michael Julius (father), the grandson of the late-Vernon and Nancy Lane, and is married and the proud father of three children.As a fisherman and crabber, he understands the importance of fishing for the way of life and heritage of the Lummi people. As a leader who thinks local and global, he played a leadership role in developing the Lummi Nation’s recent climate change Resolution, one of the first of its kind in Indian Country. In addition to his work with the Lummi Nation, Jay was a successful private entrepreneur and accumulated a wealth of business experience. He currently shares his passion for business, self-improvement, and leadership through his Life Coaching practice. He is an avid reader and student of the history and culture of his people, and a man of great faith and hope who understands the importance to his family and all his relations of strengthening families and preserving family values.
