Orcas Center brings ballet from Russia to the island! Bring the family to the Bolshoi Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet, streaming from Moscow to Orcas Center on William Shakespeare’s timeless story, Romeo and Juliet, written in 1595, is brought to the stage through breathtaking choreography and Sergei Prokofiev’s much-loved score. With its famous melodies, rhythmic variety and universal theme, this story of impossible love remains an all-time favorite, and is one of the world’s most popular ballets. Stellar performances by Alexander Volchkov and Anna Nikulina illuminate this masterpiece, making the immortal tale of the lovers of Verona an unforgettable experience.
The internationally renowned Bolshoi Ballet is based at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. Founded in 1776, the Bolshoi is among the world’s oldest ballet companies. It achieved worldwide acclaim in the early 20th century when Moscow became the capital of Soviet Russia. The Bolshoi is recognized as one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. It is by far the world’s biggest ballet company, having more than 200 dancers.
The Bolshoi building, which for many years now has been regarded as one of Moscow’s main sights, was opened in 1856 on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day. The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia for all time. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it has made and continues to make to the history of the Russian performing arts.
In 2011, the Bolshoi was re-opened after an extensive six-year renovation. An official cost for the renovation is 21 billion rubles ($688 million). The renovation included restoring acoustics to the original quality (which had been lost during the Soviet Era), as well as restoring the original Imperial decor of the Bolshoi.
“Ballet, at this level, is a belief system, and the Bolshoi remains one of its cathedrals.”– Guardian
