Orcas Center presents the New York Met’s Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod streaming Live in HD on Sunday, January 22 at 1:00 pm. If you’ve not yet experienced the Metropolitan Opera streamed from New York City to Orcas Center, now you can be initiated to a “front row” opera with internationally acclaimed greats.

Diana Damrau plays the tragic Juliette in Bartlett Sher’s new production of Gounod’s opera based on Shakespeare’s romance. Vittorio Grigolo plays Romeo. “The temperature rises nearly to boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together” reported the New York Times in 2015 when the stars of Romeo et Juliette appeared together in Manon. Now they’re back in Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation of the story of ill-fated young lovers singing “with white-hot sensuality and impassioned lyricism.”

This new production of Roméo et Juliette by director Bartlett Sher also features Virginie Verrez as Stéphano, Elliot Madore as Mercutio, and Mikhail Petrenko as Frère Laurent. The production has already won acclaim for its vivid scenery and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts Gounod’s sumptuous score.

Tickets for the Met’s Roméo et Juliette are $20, $15 for students, $2 off for Orcas Center members, and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12-2 pm. $5 subsidized tickets available at the Box Office.
