THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the President Washington, DC 20500
EXECUTIVE ORDER
RESTORING THE HISTORIC WILKES EXPEDITION NAMES TO THE GREAT NAVY ARCHIPELAGO OF THE BEAUTIFUL STATE OF WASHINGTON
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and to preserve our cherished American heritage, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. Purpose. The historic United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842, led by the distinguished Lieutenant Charles Wilkes of our GREAT United States Navy, conducted the first comprehensive American naval survey of the Pacific Northwest. During this voyage, Lieutenant Wilkes designated the island chain now known as the San Juan Islands as the “Navy Archipelago” and bestowed upon its features names honoring brave naval officers who served our great Nation with courage and patriotism, replacing the un-American names created by Francisco de Eliza’s MEXICAN 1791 expedition. Unfortunately Wilkes’s names were not universally adopted, necessitating this Executive Order.
Section 2. Restoration of Historic Names. The following designations shall be restored to their original glory:
(a) The island group currently known as the San Juan Islands shall be officially designated as the “Navy Archipelago,” reflecting the proud legacy of our American Navy;
(b) San Juan Island shall be designated as “Rodgers Island” in honor of Commodore John Rodgers;
(c) Orcas Island shall be designated as “Hull Island” in honor of Commodore Isaac Hull, hero of the War of 1812;
(d) Shaw Island shall be designated as “Chauncey Island” in honor of Commodore Isaac Chauncey;
(e) Lopez Island shall be designated as “Perry Island” in honor of Commodore Matthew C. Perry;
(f) Waldron Island shall be designated as “Manning Island” in honor of Lieutenant Manning;
(g) Presidents Channel, between the islands formerly known as Orcas and Waldron, shall be designated as “President Trump Channel” in recognition of the 47th President’s commitment to preserving American naval heritage.
Section 4. Implementation.
(a) The Secretary of the Interior shall, in consultation with the Board on Geographic Names, implement the changes specified in Section 3 of this order.
(b) The Secretary of Commerce shall ensure that all future nautical charts and navigational materials reflect these restored designations.
(c) All executive departments and agencies shall update their records and materials including navigational charts to reflect these restored designations within 180 days of this order.
Section 5. General Provisions.
(a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

How about the price of eggs?
Please ban the Bird Flu, President Trump.
I’d laugh, but I don’t doubt it could happen. Oh. My comment is too short. I’d say “wake me when the next four years are over,” but I’m too busy opening my emails from the ACLU, Indivisible, Planned Parenthood, and the National Immigrant Justice Center. How’s that?
Yes, then we could all say,”We’re going to Hull in a handbasket”.
Perfectly true in many ways!
I better clarify my comment, above, in which I ask President Trump to please ban bird flu.
As a biologist I know that no one can “ban” a virus, such as bird flu.
We can try to take measures to slow its spread among egg and poultry producers. But bird flu is out there among wild animals, including such animals as seals, raccoons, cats -from our domesticated cats to big cats such as cougars and tigers -likely any animal that might eat a dead or dying bird. Birds migrate all over the world. The bird flu virus has already spread globally.
As for President Trump “banning” bird flu, there are people who will believe anything that he says, especially if appeals to their emotions or prejudices and preys on their ignorance.
There are those (who may not be Trump devotees) who do not understand how science works. They discount science when its conclusions change. They don’t understand that science is a process and that we as scientists are continually learning more. Sometimes conclusions change radically, such as in a new study just published on January 6, 2025 about cheese consumption being associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. I love cheese -so I am very pleased by the new findings. Learn more at this video:

When I first read this I figured that Lin had misplaced her calendar and thought today was April Fools Day…I look forward to hear what our Governor and Congressional Representatives have to say about this…
It occurs to me that P.T. Barnum, founder of the Great American Circus and his acolyte, President Trump (P.T.), founder of the Make America Great Again Party, have a lot in common: “There’s a sucker born every minute.”
When April Fools Day is everyday, we’re gonna need a little humor to keep us afloat.

Thank you for the interesting link Janet, (and thank you Lin / Orcasonian for allowing such). Having grown up part time on the family farm in SW Missouri and loving everything dairy, this is good news to hear.
In a world of ever-evolving science, with so much privately owned media, and so much government manipulated censorship, disinformation, and misinformation… it becomes difficult, at times, to be able to discern fact from fiction. And once you see it you cannot unsee it… and you start to see it everywhere.
“The flaws of our leaders perfectly mirror the emotional underdevelopment of the society that elevates them to power.” Jill Stein
disinformation: false information which is intended to mislead, especially propaganda issued by a government organization to a rival power or the media: “the entire Western intelligence system had been systematically manipulated with clever disinformation.”
misinformation: false or inaccurate information, especially that which is deliberately intended to deceive: “nuclear matters are often entangled in a web of secrecy and misinformation.”
Scheerpost (Alan MacLeod / Mint Press News) 1/05/25– BBC Middle East Editor Exposed as CIA, Mossad Collaborator
“The CIA, in particular, has an extensive record of penetrating media outlets. As far back as the 1970s, the Church Committee unearthed the existence of Operation Mockingbird, a secret project to infiltrate newsrooms across America with secret agents masquerading as journalists. Investigative reporter Carl Bernstein’s work found that the agency had cultivated a network of over 400 individuals it considered assets, including the owner of The New York Times.”

Perhaps the author caption, “ || FROM A CREATIVE, ANONYMOUS ISLANDER ||” isn’t enough of a flashing neon sign that this might be satire – indeed, it is quite upsetting to read the content of this writing as a long-time local and lover of our home.
Or perhaps, Lin, you are steering the Orcasonian away from being a valid news source that posts quality and VERIFIABLE information.
Either way, I feel the best thing to say can only be said with an acronym, to avoid being banned for swearing:
W.T.A.F.?
Author is “FROM A CREATIVE ANONYMOUS ISLANDER”
Nothing at https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-names-that-honor-american-greatness/ listing the renaming executive actions so evidently it must be an early April Fools joke.
Are you seeking that idyllic, remote, picturesque, laid-back, shangri-la for the rest of your life? You can just go to Hull!
Double-take. While my first reading told me that this reportage by a “creative, anonymous islander” was a complete gag, I subsequently realized it’s not: it’s a parody (not so far off) of the real thing: the Executive Order, signed January 20, 2025 “Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness.” https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-names-that-honor-american-greatness/, consisting, in part, of the following:
“Sec. 3. Renaming of Mount McKinley. (a) President William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, heroically led our Nation to victory in the Spanish-American War. Under his leadership, the United States enjoyed rapid economic growth and prosperity, including an expansion of territorial gains for the Nation. President McKinley championed tariffs to protect U.S. manufacturing, boost domestic production, and drive U.S. industrialization and global reach to new heights. He was tragically assassinated in an attack on our Nation’s values and our success, and he should be honored for his steadfast commitment to American greatness…In 1917, the country officially honored President McKinley through the naming of North America’s highest peak. Yet after nearly a century, President Obama’s administration, in 2015, stripped the McKinley name from federal nomenclature, an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice.” and…
“Sec. 4. Gulf of America. (a) The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America…The bountiful geology of this basin has made it one of the most prodigious oil and gas regions in the world, providing roughly 14% of our Nation’s crude-oil production and an abundance of natural gas, and consistently driving new and innovative technologies that have allowed us to tap into some of the deepest and richest oil reservoirs in the world…The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America.” The whole thing’s worth a read.
So…joke / no joke…Sometimes pretty hard to tell these days. And, by the way, while we’re creating a whole new “Department of Governmental Efficiency,” doesn’t all this bureaucratic foorforall seem a bit extraneous? In any case, today’s laugh…coming soon to a theatre near you?
Having missed the note about the author, I confess to have been totally taken in my this clever post, and I read it, past tense, as an example of the extent to which our new Prez will go to demonstrate his belief in his absolute power over blue states.
This was a very good example of what I will call “counter-trolling.”’. Very clever and I found it amusing.
Seems like it did violate the rule here that commenters identify themselves by providing their actual names.
But that’s Lin’s concern, not mine.
But the most interesting thing for me was seeing how many local readers were fooled.
Trump loves to troll liberals who will believe anything, no matter how absurd, so long as it fits their political biases. It’s a key component of his negotiating strategy,
The actual history of the Wilkes Expedition is much more interesting. Wilkes was unliked by his crews. To the extent that the expedition surveyors depicted a fictitious island between Lummi Island and Sucia that did not exist. Their intent was to discredit his expedition. Also, Waldron Island was named by Wilkes to honor two brothers who served on the crew of the Vincennes, his flagship. That name has stuck.
Good job Lin!. Off our seats now with this finely crafted piece are we?. So much fun.
“Trump loves to troll liberals who will believe anything, no matter how absurd, so long as it fits their political biases. It’s a key component of his negotiating strategy,”
Are you FK Scott? Trump loves to troll his base “who will believe anything, no matter how absurd, so long as it fits their political biases.” It’s a key component of his entire existence.
Thank you! For not including Cayou Channel! I would have been . . . distraught.
