The Orcas Community Resource Center is inviting community members to take part in the next cohort of Orcas Money Smart, a seven-month financial wellness program designed to help participants build financial confidence, strengthen decision-making skills, and work toward greater financial stability.

Classes begin Monday, October 5, and will meet on the first and third Monday of each month from 5:30–7:30 p.m. through March 2027. Class size is limited to 10 participants to allow for meaningful discussion, individualized support, and a strong sense of community.

Orcas Money Smart offers practical tools for everyday financial decisions at every stage of life. Whether participants are just getting started, planning ahead, working toward a specific goal, or simply looking for a refresher, the program provides supportive education and resources tailored to real-life needs.

Topics include budgeting, saving, banking, credit, debt, housing decisions, disaster preparedness, consumer protection, and planning for the future. In addition to class sessions, each participant is paired with a trained volunteer mentor who provides encouragement, accountability, and individualized support as participants create and work toward their own SMART goals.

The mentor relationship is collaborative and participant-driven, recognizing that every person’s financial journey is unique. Participants are never expected to share personal financial information beyond what they are comfortable discussing.

“Orcas Money Smart is grounded in the principles of respect, choice, collaboration, and empowerment,” said Erin O’Dell, Resource Center Executive Director. “We recognize that financial experiences are shaped by many life circumstances, and we strive to create a welcoming environment where participants feel safe, supported, and free from judgment.”

The program is built on the belief that everyone deserves access to financial knowledge and the opportunity to build a more secure future. Throughout the program, instructors and mentors provide encouragement and focus on each participant’s strengths, resilience, and personal growth.

Snacks and beverages are provided at every class. Participants who attend all sessions, actively engage with their mentor, and complete their individualized SMART goals will receive a completion bonus in recognition of their commitment and hard work.

Community members do not need to be current Orcas Community Resource Center clients to participate. To learn more or register, visit orcascrcfinance.org.
