The Fidalgo Island, Anacortes DAT (American Red Cross) was activated Sunday, May 20, 2012 for a structure fire at a 14,000 square foot home on Guemes Island.
Due to the number of firefighters who needed support, team leaders from San Juan Island American Red Cross were contacted for assistance. Arlin and Earlene Rothauge were able to join this event.
The Rothauges were able to obtain equipment from the Anacortes office; McDonald’s in Anacortes donated 5 gallons of coffee, and provided 100 hamburgers for the firefighters at 50% discount. Bob’s Chowder Bar donated some clam chowder and some wrap sandwiches. Guemes Island CERT also responded with chili, sandwiches, water, granola bars and more.
Allan Roochvarg of San Juan Island was a key in communications as cell phone reception on Guemes Island is spotty at best.
Sometimes it takes a whole Chapter to support one catastrophic event within the Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross. We are there for each other and for you, the public.
