Food Masters will offer a Seaweed Harvesting Workshop on Tuesday, June 5 from 10 a.m. -3 p.m., taught by local seaweed expert Ryan Drum. The class will be held at the Camp Orkila beach and participants are encouraged to meet at the North Camp Orkila parking lot no later than 10 a.m.
This class is a special opportunity as June 5 will be the lowest tide of the year!
Attendees will learn how to identify and ethically harvest local sea vegetables, how to use them as food and medicine, and how to dry, process, and store them. You will have the opportunity to harvest sample amounts of several types of seaweed.
Although not required in order to attend, anyone wishing to harvest seaweed must bring their own pair of scissors or pocket knife, lots of small plastic bags, and a seaweed harvesting permit obtainable from the sporting goods store for under $20.
The cost of the class is $30. Also, all participants are asked to familiarize themselves with Camp Orkila’s guest policy.
Some scholarships and/or trade opportunities are available upon inquiry. To register for the class contact Learner Limbach at foodmasters.orcas@gmail.com or 376-4048.
