On Friday, January 19 th , the Orcas public school students will host several different age-appropriate presentations regarding Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The schools were closed for the King Birthday Holiday on Monday, so Dr. King will be recognized on Friday.
These programs are co-sponsored by Orcas Center, the Outlook Inn and New Leaf Café, and Woman in the Woods Productions. Each informational and entertaining program will include a short presentation from Michell Marshall about the life of Dr. King, followed by entertainment which reflects Dr. King’s life and times.
Orcas Island music legend and music instructor Martin Lund is coordinating several musical presentations, some featuring student musicians. Martin will be bringing back to Orcas Peter Kirkland, a well known singer and songwriter who has entertained audiences across the world and has a special knack for engaging his audiences.
Slam Poet Alex Dang also will address each group of students. In real life, he is an elementary school teacher, and he looks forward to helping make Dr. King’s life accessible to our younger students. He has performed for Orcas High School students in the past, and he “probably” will perform a poem composed specially to honor Dr. King.
Woman in the Woods thanks our co-sponsors, and especially the Outlook Inn and New Leaf Café, which is donating accommodations for our out of town artists. The New Leaf Café is currently closed, but dinner service will return on February 15, and brunch returns in March. Dinner reservations are now available.
