— from Washington State Legislature —
The considerable accomplishments of two iconic Washingtonians will be recognized with America’s single highest civilian honor this week at the White House when President Obama will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Bill Ruckelshaus and, posthumously, to Billy Frank Jr.
“These two incredible Washingtonians and absolutely remarkable Americans well deserve this recognition,” Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas Island, said today. “Because of them, our state is a better place and our country is a better nation.”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom goes to those “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to the White House statement.
Ruckelshaus is being honored for his work as a “dedicated public servant who has worked tirelessly to protect public health and combat global challenges like climate change,” according to the White House.
Frank is being honored for his “tireless advocacy for Indian treaty rights and environmental stewardship and for his activism that paved the way for the Boldt decision which reaffirmed tribal co-management of salmon resources in the state of Washington.
“What those of us who know Bill and knew Billy understand is that there could be no two individuals who are more deserving of this honor,” Ranker said. “They dedicated their entire lives to making our world a better place — not only for us but for generations to come. Washington State is extremely fortunate to have had these two giant Americans call this great state home.”
