A famous pair of LUMMI native royalty
were renowned for bringing joy
into the tribe
by sharing their playful spirits
Long ago Earth Mother Sola
became sick and retreated from the People
the whole Salish Sea region
was overcome with sickness and depression
This sister and brother
began greeting their friends
by dancing — shaking their bodies
which were adorned with feathers
This made the friends happy
so they shared the dance with others
Soon every one was greeting this way
and smiles warmed the People again
Mother Sola returned to watch
bringing her golden warmth to the land
The siblings thus became known
as the retrievers of the gold!
Mother Sola gathered the great spirits
and they agreed when the siblings left this earth
they would return in new form as
Happy wolves — the golden retrievers
