I Am This Land
Sandora Hedrich
I am this land
at times the expanse that flows out so far
I cannot even see where I end and you begin
to bridge the spans that divide
I am this land
humus and sand
This small square spot where everyday you set
your toes and soles upon my fine feldspar, sparkling
mica, resonating with quartz, my coat of many colors
Upon your command, I transform your tiny seeds
into verdant towers, silently sharing my skeleton
of nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon
For you, I break apart, time and again, sending
my desperate particles of dust to cling tight to you
I am this land
Thirsty longing land
So parched for your time, your hand, your heart
Watching all these years unfold from then
sediment of centuries waiting for you, and them
to touch me in the way you touch your lover
under the sheets of sky, under the cover of night
I am waiting for the eclipse of your eyes to pass
and rain down with a waterfall of light
until I run rushing rivers of hope
over the rampant tomorrow
rife with dreams
we share.
