A free screening of the awarding winning documentary A Plastic Ocean will take place at the Sea View Theatre, Wednesday, March 6th at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. A post-screening discussion with local organizations and businesses who will provide real actions and helpful solutions to inspire our community to rethink their plastic use.
A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and are eventually consumed by us.
In this adventure documentary, journalist Craig Leeson teams up with free diver Tanya Streeter and an international team of scientists and researchers, as they travel to 20 locations around the world to uncover alarming truths about plastic pollution, and reveal working solutions that can be put into immediate effect.
This event is a collaboration between a number of local organizations including, San Juan Public Works, local businesses, and community members, all with the goal of supporting a better understanding of what’s happening with this real environmental crisis and how we islanders can be part of the solution.
“It’s just not enough to talk about how much plastic is a problem for our environment and our health, we need to make changes, even small changes that will hopefully lead to big changes,” says OIFF’s Donna Laslo. “There is great power in working together, to support each other with the practices and choices that are sustainable.
A fun, six week Plastic Free Challenge will be initiated at this event. Come early to discover innovative ideas that will help you with your challenge. Local award winning young environmental filmmaker Dylan D’Haeze will also present his most recent short films.
