— from Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce —

Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2. San Juan County applied for and received approval on Saturday, May 23 from the State to move into Phase 2 of the Governor’s Safe Start plan. What does that mean for Orcas Island and the County?

Please read the County’s Press Release regarding the move into Phase 2 (found here). County Health Director Dr. Frank James has established these exceptions to the Governor’s Phase 2 rules: (1) to provide that recreational camping is not allowed at the four ferry-served islands in San Juan County, specifically Lopez Island, Orcas Island, San Juan Island, and Shaw Island; and (2) to provide that overnight recreational moorage at any port or marina in San Juan County is not allowed. Dr. James May 20th letter of recommendation to move to Phase 2 can be found here.

Face mask requirements. Now that San Juan County is in Phase 2face coverings are required in all public businesses as per San Juan County Health Officer order 2020-4. To help educate the public and customers of this critical requirement to ensure the health of our community several printable posters have been developed. Businesses have 48 hours from the move to Phase 2 to post signage- mid-day on Monday the 25th.

Masks for local businesses. Thanks to the generosity of the Orcas Island Community Foundation and its donors, a supply of masks for local businesses and their customers are available through the Chamber of Commerce. If you would like to request a small supply of masks for your customers, please email the Chamber. Our supplies are limited.

Signage for mask wearing. Does your business expect to have customers visiting your store or shop? OICF has several different posters you can print that encourage your customers to don a mask before they enter. Posters here.

Working with your Customers. Paul Berry, a mental health professional (thero.org) and Ed Andrews, OICF trustee and communications professional, have been working on providing tips and skill development to help businesses reopen safely and avoid confrontations. I have attached their outline. Thank you OICF for making this available.

How will Phase 2 affect your business? Are you open for business … or planning to open? Send us an email with your plans and we will update the Chamber website. Want it announced in our Blast email? Just send us your update (blast@orcasislandchamber.com).

Our community is pulling together as we face this pandemic together. We wish you well.
