Fundraisers begin with bake sale and car wash this afternoon
Last weekend, the Orcas Sailing team dominated the 2009 NWISA Doublehanded District Championships and have earned a slot at the national sailing competition to be held mid-May in Florida.
Sail Orcas — the community sailing club — the Orcas High School Sailing Team and Camp Four Winds hosted the district championships on West Sound April 18-19.
Members of the Orcas High School Sailing Team will hold a Bake Sale at Island Market and a car wash at Key Bank this afternoon, April 23, as fundraisers for their trip to Florida to compete in the national competition.
The bake sale will be from 3 to 7 p.m. and the car wash will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Over 130 sailors and 12 schools participated in the two day event last weekend. Twenty races were completed on the Varsity course in light and shifty breezes, with each race taking about 25 minutes to complete.
Sailing team coach Burke Thomas said that senior skippers Sam Parish and Barrett North with sophomore crews of Annalies Schuh and Jake White, respectively, sailed very consistently in the tricky winds.
Orcas will be one of twenty teams from around the nation traveling to St. Peterberg, Florida and competing for the Mallory Trophy which is High School Sailing’s Doublehanded National Championship.
The national competition will take place May 15-17.
