Open House on Tuesday, March 3, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Eastsound Fire Hall
Roadway between McNallie Lane and Nordstrom Lane would have curves straightened
— from San Juan County Public Works —
In January, the adjacent property owners and Orcas community voted on four alternatives. Alternative #2, the Curvilinear Alignment, received the greatest number of votes and we are now proceeding with the preliminary design. Please come to the Open House, see additional visual renderings and give us your input on some of the design details. Staff will be available to answer questions.
Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Eastsound Fire Hall, 45 Lavender Lane in Eastsound.
For additional information, contact: Shannon Wilbur, Project Engineer at (360) 370-0500.

Please come to the meeting and support this project! These two very dangerous corners are an anachronism, left over from road design of 80 years ago, when farmers wanted to have a square 40 acre field without any roads cutting through and people drove Model “T”s at 15 mph! No cyclist feels safe riding in traffic through those two sharp 90 degree turns! And few, if any motorists feel comfortable passing a cyclist there!
Actually, the chosen road design does NOT “straighten out” Orcas Road! The new road will continue to turn 90 degrees at Nordstrom Rd., and the next turn at Swan Rd. will actually increase from a 90 degree turn to over 100 degrees, a greater turn than it has been!
The headline of this announcement should have read, “Making The Curves On Orcas Road Less Dangerous”.
Turning left onto Nordstrom Lane will me more hazardous. It looks like the turn is sharper and the visibilty would be less.
Jeni, I don’t know how the Nordstrom road could be any more hazardous than it is! If you look at the accident statistics, that’s where they all are. The new plan will be like the Mt. Baker Rd/Terrell Bech Rd and Mt. Baker Rd/Lovers Lane intersections. The latter has better sight distance, though.
