Beginning next week, the Orcas Recreation Program begins art and music classes to Orcas Island kids and visitors — and adults are welcome to attend too!

On July 13,  artist Cheryl Jackson will be offering “You Can Make It!” art classes at the public school cafeteria for three consecutive Mondays — July 13, 20, and 27 from 1 to 4 p.m.. Children will make Silly Putty, paper crafts such as Chinese lanterns and window butterflies, beading necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, and more.

The projects will be set up as stations, so that after instruction, participants can create at their own pace. Participants may sign up for one, two, or three sessions. Each session, they can make new things.

For ages 6 to 12 years, cost $20 per class. Register for each class separately by calling the Orcas Island Recreation Program (376-5339) or on line at www.orcasrec.org.

Also beginning next week, Pamela Wright music elementary teacher at Orcas School will give keyboard instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays,July 14 through 23 at the public elementary school. Beginners (ages 7 to 11) will be taught from 9 to 10 a.m.; older beginners, (age 12 to 16) will be taught from 11 a.m. to noon;  adult beginners  (17 and up –yes Grandma and Grandpa too!) will be taught from 1 to 2 p.m.

Wright also offers the  terrific annual two-week violin camp, consisting of hands-on experience with the violin, basic music theory, and learning about the different types of orchestral groups.

Beginning Violin Camp begins next week, running fromJuly 13 to 24 onMondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the elementary music room in the public school. For ages 7-up.
