After overwhelming support by the people of Orcas Island, the “Orcas Rec” Initiative has gained sufficient signatures needed to make the November ballot. This was confirmed by the San Juan County Auditor, who approved 590 signatures today, Firiday, July 24.
Orcas Islanders representing the current Orcas Rec Program, the School District, the Funhouse, and others committed to our kids and community set up shop at the Farmers Market, ferry lines, Olga Days, and other places around the island to gain the signatures needed.
A resolution has been prepared to call for a public hearing regarding the intitiative on Tuesday August 25 at 11:15 a.m. in Friday Harbor. There will also be a special filing period for candidates open in the later part of August.
