Would you like to learn more about preserving food for the winter from your abundant garden? In this hands-on class, students will be learning and preserving food, using various types of preservation methods such as canning, drying, and fermentation, with a brief overview of smoking food.
The class on ways to “put food up” for the winter, will take place this Saturday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Home Ec Room at Orcas Middle School.
Entrance to the Home Ec room is to the left from the front door of the high school, or through the double blue doors to the right of the school library courtyard.
Rusty Diggs, whose passion is helping others preserve food will be teaching the class, which is open to youth and adults. The cost is $20.
Students should bring their own clean or new jars with clean lids as well as excess produce from their own gardens, enough to preserve. Some food will also be provided.
Students are asked to bring a sack lunch as well. For questions, call Rusty at 376-4486 or call the Orcas Rec. Program office at 376-5339 to register.
