Orcas Island Public Library

The Orcas Island Library continues “Orcas Reads,” its celebration of the works of Thornton Wilder with the creation of a ‘time capsule’ for our lobby display case. In Wilder’s play, Our Town, the characters seem largely unaware of the details of their lives and tend to accept their circumstances passively. But life is inherently transient, and Wilder exhorts us to understand the importance of our everyday actions and interactions.

Think about what one everyday object you might include in a time capsule. Is there a single item that you feel represents the social, cultural, or spiritual life on Orcas Island? If so, please bring it to the library by January 31st to be included in the display! We’ll label each item with the contributor’s name and a short statement about why that particular piece is relevant to them. The time capsule will be displayed through the month of February in the library lobby.  Afterward, the objects will be returned to their owners.
