Orcas Issues, News and Views  is looking for more reporters. We need people who are interested in the work undertaken by all our taxing districts — school, library, park and recreation, port, fire and rescue and health districts– and feature articles regarding our social and cultural events. The taxing districts would involve reading the agendas, and often supporting documents, and then reporting on the discussion at the meetings.

These “beats” could include county work, such as through advisory committees, or departments such as Health, Social Services, Prosecutor, Marine, etc. Sometimes it may be dry, but I enjoy the “soap operas” of the work and dedication of those who serve our community. These are non-editorial reports where the reporters don’t enter their own viewpoints or goal.

The feature articles can cover the history and “breakthroughs” of organizations, individuals, and businesses who reach for goals to enrich us all. These articles have more leeway to those personally.

All reporting is done under the supervision of our editors (Lin McNulty and Margie Doyle).

So that is the “bare bones” of it.

We have had great good fortune over the years with Cara Russell, and interns Brigid Ehrmantraut, Madeleine Treneer and Emma Heikkinen, and now with our “newest” reporters Matthew Gilbert and Susan McBain, covering the Port Master Plan, the Fire & Rescue Dept and Public Health Commission. We look forward to having more community journalists. We pay minimum wage ($15).

Please contact us at editor@OrcasIssues.com  if interested in pursuing this further, and please send on this message to other you you might  be interested. Thank for your support in providing Community Journalism for our locally-owned, online news service.
