The Orcas Island Rowing (OIR) club will be holding their fourth annual  “Headless Head Regatta”  this coming Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.  The event is held at the OIR boathouse on the south end of Cascade Lake.

The competition is open to all experienced rowers, and will be followed by a potluck feast. Just turn up and they  will find you a seat to row in. The kind of rowing involved is often referred to as “crew” and involves rowing in very skinny, very long boats called “shells”. There are two general configurations: “sculling” where each rower has two oars and “sweep rowing” where each rower has one oar. Those interested in rowing should turn up early so rowing lineups can be configured.

The race follows a beautiful 3500 meter course starting in Cascade Lake’s ‘Lagoon’ and passing under the bridge before taking a lap around the main part of the lake and finishing in front of the boathouse.

Entrants and spectators alike are encouraged to wear costumes, and asked to bring a dish to share. Hot drinks and grilled cheese sandwiches will be provided. Entry is free.  Rowers need to where costumes appropriate for rowing and NW weather.

Don’t forget you need a WA state Discover Pass to park cars in Moran State Park.

For further information, email info@orcasislandrowing.org, visit www.orcasislandrowing.org or call 376-6935.  On the day of the regatta you can call the boathouse direct at 376-7362.
