The Orcas Island Clothing Bank welcomed approximately 400 people over two days Oct. 24-25, offering community members an opportunity to find clothing and other household items while giving gently used goods a second life.

The event was held at the Orcas Christian School (OCS) gymnasium, continuing a tradition that began in 1994 at the Odd Fellows Hall in town before later moving to the school.

Organizers estimated that more than 3,500 pounds of gently used clothing was recycled through the community, including children’s clothing and adult coats to help residents prepare for winter. Sunday’s turnout was nearly as busy as Saturday’s, a change from last year, when most of the traffic occurred Saturday.

“Seeing about 400 people come through the Clothing Bank over two days was wonderful, and we are so grateful for the incredible support from our community,” said Dawn Parnell, Clothing Bank organizer. “Thanks to our donors and volunteers, we estimate that more than 3,500 pounds of gently used clothing was given a second life, including much-needed children’s clothing and winter coats. It is a great reminder of what our community can accomplish when we come together to help one another.”

This year’s Clothing Bank featured clothing, shoes, accessories and linens, giving community members an opportunity to find needed items while helping keep usable goods out of landfills. Organizers thanked the community for its donations and volunteer support.

Looking ahead, one change will affect next year’s event. OCS will no longer be able to store clothing donations throughout the year. Instead, gently used clothing donations will be accepted during the week leading up to the Clothing Bank in October 2027.

Community members are encouraged to watch for announcements about next year’s donation dates.
