— from Lance Evans for Orcas Chamber of Commerce —

The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the winners in this year’s Community Parade.

It was another robust Community Parade in Eastsound [on Saturday, July 7] and with over 40 entrants in the parade, the Chamber of Commerce judges had a hard time picking the best overall winners.

Our theme for the parade this year was “Retro Orcas” … and judges took that into account when making their selections. The Chamber typically awards a best overall entry, and two runners-up. This year, with a plethora of deserving entries, the Chamber increased the runners up to four! Here are the winners:

Best Entry ($100 Cash Prize)

  • Montgomery Family – 100 Years on theRock

The Montgomery family celebrates 100 years on Orcas Island. Joseph Ray and May Montgomery moved to Orcas in 1918 and established a commercial produce farm in Deer Harbor called “Meadow Farms.” Since that time there has been a continuous presence of Montgomery family members on the island except for about two years during the Second World War.

Runners-Up (Alphabetically listed)

  • Friends of Moran ($50 Island Market GiftCertificate)

Featuring a Flatbed truck with equipment and participants representing the CCC – the Civilian Conservation Corps.

  • Odd Fellows ($50 Island Market GiftCertificate)

Here come The Odd Fellows of Mt. Constitution Lodge wearing nostalgic regalia from yesteryear, stirring up the passions of onlookers with their incredible drumming rhythms and featuring a new Kazoo band! They’ve been serving the Orcas Community since 1841.

  • Shaw Island School ($50 Island Market GiftCertificate)

Direct from their triumph as Grand Marshals of the Shaw Island Parade last weekend, Shaw School lead Teacher Diane Clifton and music teacher Anita Orne bring it to Orcas, ably chauffeured by Gordon Koenig on this classic island rig.
