They win it in a shootout

The Orcas Island Vikings’ girls’ soccer team defeated the Napavine Tigers for the State 1B/2B soccer championship from Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.  The score was 1-1 after two overtime periods.

For the second straight day, the Orcas Vikings’ girls’ soccer squad found themselves beyond overtime and into the shootout format to determine a winner. Yesterday, the Vikings netted 4-of-6 shootout attempts. Today, for the championship win, they hit on 3 successive shootout goals.  Ashley Klein, Hannah North and Emily Diepenbrock were all successful on their shootout tries.  Napavine missed on their first two, and had the third attempt blocked by goalie Alison O’Toole.

The Lady Vikings found themselves in an overtime opportunity for the championship, thanks to Stephanie Shaw’s late-game, left-footer from seven yards out to tie the score for Orcas Island.

In the 75th minute, the Vikings finally pressed through Napavine’s intense defense, and the Orcas forwards clipped the ball in front of the Tigers’ goal. Stephanie Shaw, a mid-fielder, backed into her defender and got a left-footer past Sam Grove and into the upper-right corner of Napavine’s net to tie the game 1-1 – the only goal in the second half.

Napavine’s forward, Elaun Sherwood found herself standing over a loose ball that was bounding off shins and shoes of both teams’ players just in front of the Viking goal. Sherwood’s right-footed swipe didn’t get much on the ball, but it slowly trickled through attempted kicks by Orcas defenders and the diving goalie, Alison O’Toole, before it rolled into goal on the left side from eight yards out in the 37th minute of play for the only goal of the first half.

The Vikings are coached by Chama Anderson and Bridget O’Toole.
