Seven Orcas High School students were inducted into the National Merit Society today.
At a ceremony similar to those held throughout the nation, Superintendent/High School Principal Barbara Kline saluted the students who have achieved National Honor Society Recognition by achieving high standards in scholarship, leadership, service and character.
The new inductees are: Jamison Rose, Serena Sanders, Cameron Smart, Huxley Smart, Kathryn Tidwell, Sofie Thixton and Jacqlynn Zier.
They joined National Honor Society members Lanie Padbury, Halley McCormick, Makayla Forster, Taylor Diepenbrock, Emily Diepenbrock, Bobbi Lowry and Jeannie Tran.
Also honored at the ceremony for their service and achievements were members of Point Blank (“Peers Educating Peers in Prevention”), Teen Tutors, and Key Club members. Teachers Val Heller, Gregory Books and Brett McFarland commended outstanding students in their classes.
Candidates for Associated Student Body officers gave campaign speeches. High school students will vote today on new officers.
Kline told the assembled group of students, teachers, staff and parents, “”It is important we recognize the work you all do and the awards you receive. We are fortunate to get more and more scholarships and awards every year.” The scholarships and awards for graduating seniors will be announced at the Celebration of Success on Friday, June 11.
