Thursday, June 12, at approximately 7:10 p.m., OIFR firefighters were dispatched to the Orcas Highlands neighborhood for the report of a brush fire. Arriving units found approximately 2500 square feet of slow burning brush on a vacant lot. 29 responders with 8 apparatus extinguished the fire which caused minimal property damage. There were no injuries to civilians or responders.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the San Juan County Fire Marshal.
Outdoor burning remains open as the current fire risk remains “low.” Based upon the current weather forecast, and the fuel moisture trend, we are looking to close burning on the traditional June 30th date. That being said, it is important to be vigilant while burning at all times.
A hearty thank you to the neighbors for helping our crews, our fabulous Auxiliary for nourishing the responders, and our amazing members for their hard work!
Take care and stay safe.
