— from Marla Johns, OIFR Public Information Officer —
At approximately 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2015, Orcas Island Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire on Apple Tree Lane. Batallion Chief Shepler arrived first on scene and found a three-story home to be fully engulfed in flames. Shepler ordered an immediate defensive attack in an effort to save a surrounding art studio, detached garage/shop, vehicles and surrounding trees and wooded areas. The occupants of the home had been able to escape prior to the arrival of Orcas Fire units.
The crew first on scene were able to utilize compressed air foam while additional fire units deployed multiple hose lines to all sides of the property. Two 2,300 pound vacuum tenders shuttled water to the fire scene. OPALCO crews were on scene within minutes and disconnected power to the structure. Fire Auxiliary was activated and responded in order to provide rehab support to the volunteers. Orcas CARES volunteers responded to assist the family, and will continue providing family support in the coming days.
Fire crews remained on scene all night to ensure the fire was extinguished and no hot spots reignited. Though the home is considered a total loss, the efforts of the more than 25 volunteer responders saved the art studio, garage/shop, vehicles and prevented spread to adjacent forest land; without loss of life or injury to anyone.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to have originated from fireplace embers. The occupants were awakened by at least two smoke detectors, which allowed them to evacuate the home, surely saving their lives. OIFR uses this event to remind everyone to make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home.
