— from Dennis King for Lahari —

As we age, driving can sometimes become challenging, and even though we’re still driving, we can have temporary driving issues after planned surgeries or unplanned falls. Research has shown shown that lack of access to transportation services can contribute to the increase of social isolation and a general decline of mental and physical health. Transportation, therefore, is an essential service if we want to stay on the island as we age.

That is why, one year ago, Lahari launched Orcas Door to Door, an assistive transportation service for older islanders that are homebound. Orcas Door to Door provides rides for medical appointments, shopping trips, as well as social and community events, with volunteer drivers using their personal vehicles. Volunteer drivers are vetted with background and driving record checks.

In the last 12 months, thanks to our pool of 20 volunteer drivers, close to 400 rides, totalling over 2,300 miles have been provided. Thirty eight island residents have enrolled in the program and we’re now providing 40 to 50 rides per month. Becoming a member is free and easy: enrollment forms are available at the Orcas Senior Center or online at OrcasDoorToDoor.org.

Members have used the service for medical, dental, and physical therapy appointments, errands and trips to the ferry. Some members have just used the service while they were recovering from a scheduled procedure or an unscheduled fall, while other members have a more permanent need for rides.

But all of this would not possible without our awesome pool of volunteer drivers. And we need more of them. Please consider joining the team of Orcas Door to Door volunteer drivers. It’s quick and easy to volunteer with an online application and background check. Volunteer drivers may drive as little or as much as their schedule permits and you’ll be helping a fellow islander stay on Orcas.
