Orcas Christian teachers return inspired from conference

Teachers from Orcas Christian School joined more than 150 educators from 26 schools across the Washington Conference of Seventh-day Adventists for a gathering focused on worship, professional growth, and collaboration. The event left participants energized and ready for the school year.

A central theme of the conference was Standards-Based Learning, which shifts the focus from grades to mastery and ensures every student has meaningful opportunities to grow. Presenters emphasized that while resources and tools support instruction, it is ultimately the teacher who guides students along their learning journey.

The gathering also balanced professional learning with lighthearted activities that fostered teamwork and camaraderie. One group exercise challenged participants to spot hidden band names in a colorful image, first individually, then with a partner, and finally in a larger group, highlighting the value of multiple perspectives.

For the OCS team, one of the most meaningful aspects of the conference was reconnecting with colleagues and friends from across the conference. Educators shared strategies, hands-on ideas, and encouragement, creating a supportive and joyful environment.

“Spending time with colleagues—other people who love young people and educational ministry service—is inspiring and fun. It’s like a family gathering,” said teacher Andy Rivera.

By the end of the event, OCS teachers left with fresh strategies for implementing Standards-Based Learning and a renewed sense of purpose.

“I came for the food and friendship, I left with a sense of purpose and a relaxed attitude that I will be able to accomplish whatever is set before me in the classroom this year,” teacher, Kallie McCutcheon said.

The combination of worship, laughter, and professional growth reinforced the value of the conference, leaving educators energized and ready to guide their students with inspiration, skill, and purpose.
