Orcas Christian School embraces several longstanding traditions, including an annual service day that connects students with the community.
On Friday, Oct. 9, students participated in several service projects around Eastsound, putting their Christian values into action by serving others. The school’s vision is to foster a community-connected culture where students embrace Christian values. Service is a core component of Christian education.
“We don’t want service to just be an idea, though. At OCS, we want to showcase our service in actionable ways that impact the community and demonstrate our love and care for our neighbors and friends,” said Joel Shetler, the school’s principal.
“Our theme and verse of the year is found in 1 John 3:18, where love is an action that we share with others. This is best demonstrated through our service opportunities to our community, showing the love we have for them,” Shetler said.
High school students worked with Orcas Island Community Church to stack a large pile of chopped firewood. Despite rainy conditions, students worked together to organize the wood into neat stacks.
Elementary school students walked to Buck Park, where they worked alongside the Parks and Recreation Department to help clean up the area. The project benefited both the community and the environment.
Middle school students focused on their own campus, raking leaves and cleaning up the grounds. They saw the results of their efforts and knew their work made a difference.
Orcas Christian School strives to demonstrate what it means to live out Christian values in the community. The school views service as an integral part of education and aims to help students understand the importance of serving others out of love.
OCS continues to create opportunities for students to live out its mission of being globally prepared, community-connected and grounded in Christian values.
