Jake Perrine and Kevin Dickey will present TWO audio workshops at Orcas Center. The workshops are open to the public, and designed for audio hobbyists who want to improve their understanding of how audio works, and how to work with it. Tuition for either workshop is a $10 donation to Orcas Center, which will be collected at the start of each workshop. Feel free to take both!

SATURDAY 5/31, 12-4pm: Intro to Audio. (Beginner: No previous audio experience required.) Topics: What is sound? How is it measured? Decibels and Hertz. Frequency and amplitude. Cables and connectors. Microphones – types and uses. Levels and level setting. Equalizers: types and uses. Basic audio mixers and how to use them. Analog vs. Digital audio.

SUNDAY 6/1, 12-4pm: Live Sound Basics. (Intermediate: above Intro to Audio topics are prerequisites) Topics: Sound reinforcement concepts. Sound system layout & speaker placement. Power on / off series. Monitoring. Mics and mic placement for various instruments. Direct boxes. Gain stages. Snakes. Mixing boards – from small to large. Inserts. Sub groups. Talkback. What is feedback, and how do you minimize it? EQ, compression, limiting, gates, reverb, delay. Running a sound check for one or more bands. And much more!

Kevin and Jake are both career audio professionals. Kevin is a co-founder of BURL and live sound tech for the Orcas Center. Jake is a mixing and mastering engineer, and has taught audio production for over a decade. Neither are receiving any pay for these workshops – this is their donation to the community to bring the quality of sound up on the island!
