On Saturday, November 10 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., an Orca Recovery Day of Action will take place at Jackson Beach on San Juan Island in coordination with Conservation District events around Puget Sound. Come hear speakers Dr. Deborah Giles, Science and Research Director for Wild Orca, Resident Scientist at UW Friday Harbor Labs, and Research Biologist for UW’s Center for Conservation Biology on the status of Southern Resident Killer Whales. Sam Barr of Samish Nation, former Stillaguamish Canoe Skipper, and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer will address Coast Salish canoe culture and healthy waterways, and Stephanie Solien, Co-Chair of Governor Inslee’s Orca Task Force will give us an update as to the task force progress to date.
Beach clean-up activities will take place throughout the day, electric vehicles will be on display, and action items for how you can help support our resident whale population will be highlighted. At 2 p.m., the Backbone Campaign will organize a photo in the shape of an Orca to show solidarity around the Salish Sea, so come dressed in black and white, and bring a black umbrella if you have one. Please carpool to the event as parking will be limited.
