Susan Osborn of the Living Room announces that Sister Lucy Kurien, William Keepin, Ph.D. and Cynthia Brix, M.Div., the Authors of “Women Healing Women” will speak about the Maher Project in India this Friday, May 29, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

Echoing the spirit of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the work of Sister Lucy Kurien and the Maher Project in India, honors all religion.

Osbon writes, “Much has been written on the plight of women in Indian society, but little in the way of solutions. [“Women Healing Women”] presents an effective practical response to the appalling injustices …and a model of hope for agencies and programs that work with oppressed women around the world.

“Women Healing Women” recounts the true story of MAHER, a remarkable center for battered women and children located near Pune, India. Founded in 1997, the project has provided refuge to more than 1,350 women, half of whom would likely otherwise have been murdered, committed suicide, or starved to death.

“Maher is an interfaith community that honors all religions and strongly repudiates caste distinctions—making it a rare beacon shining new hope upon some of the gravest problems in India and across the globe. The book is rich with stories—poignant firsthand accounts by women and children whose lives have been transformed by the Maher project. Later chapters explore the larger implications of this pioneering work, with guidance for implementing similar projects elsewhere. Written in a direct and vivid narrative style,”Women Healing Women” is an easy and compelling read. For every tale told in [the book], thousands of similar stories remain untold in India and throughout the world—most with far less happy endings.

“Maher provides a blueprint for healing these painful realities, even in some of the most patriarchal societies on earth.”
