Following John Fleming’s departure from the Orcas Island School Board, previous board member, Chris Sutton has stepped back after a four-year absence.
“I am a dad, a garage-tinkerer, a software developer, and a community volunteer. My son is in grade 10, my daughter graduated in 2020 and is now in college, and I graduated from OISD in 1988.
“I re-joined the School Board after serving eight years and then taking a break for four years. During my previous tenure on the board, we saw great progress in improving the physical campus, largely due to the support of the Orcas community and the strong leadership team. This same leadership team continues to amaze me with their compassion and dedication during COVID.
“My goal as a school board member is to support this team going forward and help make choices that keep our school on a solid financial footing.
“I feel so fortunate to live in a community that values public education. We all benefit when students feel supported and invested in themselves. This is true now more than ever considering the huge burden ahead of this generation.
“My favorite ice cream is blackberry swirl.”

Great appreciation to you, Chris, for coming back.!
And great appreciation to you, John, for your diligence in serving on the Board over the past term!
I am very happy to see you back on the School Board, Chris. You bring long-term perspective and an amazing assortment of talents, skills and experience to this arena. (I have been studying your photo, attempting to determine whether the object in your hand is in fact a blackberry swirl ice cream cone. Please advise.)
