Mathew Eggenberg, a graduate of Orcas Christian School (OCS) and former high school basketball player, is embracing his role in college basketball and is grateful to remain involved with the game.

After graduating from OCS in 2023, Eggenberg enrolled at Walla Walla University (WWU), where he has stayed close to the sport as a member of the school’s basketball operations team, serving as a student manager. WWU competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and faces off against teams from across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, including schools like Northwest University (Kirkland), Eastern Oregon University, and Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon.

In his role, Eggenberg assists with running plays in practice, maintaining uniforms and equipment, and managing team hydration.

“Mathew has been a huge help to our team. He works hard and also jumps in as a practice player. He always has a great attitude and gets along with the whole team,” said Women’s Head CoachTony Nakashima.

The experience has inspired Eggenberg to consider pursuing coaching, scouting, or other basketball operations roles in the future. He also credits his time at OCS for helping him excel at WWU.

“OCS helped me learn how to study and grow connections with others which are great skills for college and helps with the basketball team,” Eggenberg said.

His role with the team has helped Eggenberg stay motivated to keep up with his studies and hasalso helped expose him to opportunities to still be involved with sports at the inter-college level.
