For all of you bike tour groups who promote, send, or deposit your clients somewhere along the Crow Valley to Deer Harbor corridor– when someone gets injured or killed, (and eventually someone will be)… notice has been served.
I have been concerned about precisely this issue and precisely the stretch of road MJ mentions for years. I have several suggestions of increasing amplitude:
1. Post “friendly” warning signs at appropriate corners stating LOCAL bicycle traffic only due to dangerous cycling conditions.
2. Make Crow Valley Rd north of Nordstom Ln “local traffic only” for automobiles.
3. Have the county council pass legislation to forbid commercial use of Crow Valley and Deer Harbor Rd to bicycle tour companies and bike rental companies.
Please note that I am all in favor of bicycles in general and especially riding a bike instead of driving a car WHEN IT IS SAFE. Deer Harbor Rd and Crow Valley Rd are both far less than “safe” for inexperienced bicyclists. Wouldn’t it be better to do something BEFORE someone gets seriously injured or killed? Not to mention the blood pressure issues for drivers trying to get around a quarter mile of spandex clad poseurs who haven’t ridden a bicycle since they were 10 years old.
Electric bicycles are becoming more prevalent every day and it would be wise to develop some sensible rules of the road instead of people acting like they are children on a playground and pretending that there aren’t loaded dump trucks going by at 40+ mph.
Thank you. Some common sense at last. This island is not meant for leisure bicycling. Bicycling companies are putting their clients in danger.
