— from Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce —
A quick update on the cancellation of our annual July 4th Fireworks show in Eastsound.
Earlier this year our fireworks provider (Western Display) informed the Chamber and Marc Broman (Deer Harbor July 3 show) that they didn’t have enough crew for two shows.
Shortly after we heard this, the pandemic crisis accelerated. For multiple reasons (inappropriate time to fundraise; large groups gathering to watch the show, etc.), the Chamber of Commerce told Western Display we would not be putting on a show sponsored by the Chamber and our donors. The Deer Harbor group came to the same decision.
Will there be a July 4th parade in Eastsound? I believe it’s too early to make that decision. We will be guided by appropriate health care advice and the consensus of the community in making that decision … carefully.
We know a great many community members love the fireworks show and will be disappointed. It was a decision driven by factors of the times.
The Chamber of Commerce Board and Staff wish you well during these trying times. Stay safe.
